About the Artist:
Jose Chiu was born in the province of Guanabacoa, in Cuba. He is a graduate of the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts. The work of Jose Chiu uses traditional customs and folklore as a resource for subject matter wherein he seeks to identify archetypes or actual picturesque characters. Others depict scenes of cock-fighting, dancing couples and in a more personal series, close-ups of figures Chiu also explores an interior world of gentle contemplation that does not depend on local customs or folklore, but on universal human emotions.
